The Story Behind the Lens
This photograph was captured during my second visit to Banff National Park. Returning to Lake Louise in May 2009, I found a landscape vastly different from my first trip nearly two years earlier in July 2007. Rather than vibrant summer blues and greens, winter still held its grip on the valley. The lake remained frozen beneath towering peaks, fresh snow lingered along the shoreline, and the season revealed an entirely new palette of textures and contrasts.
Choosing a monochromatic presentation, which will be a common theme for the 2009 Banff and Alaska series, allowed the scene to speak through light, shadow, and texture alone. Without the distraction of colour, the rugged shoreline, layered mountain faces, and sweeping clouds become the true subjects—capturing the quiet strength and timeless character of one of Canada's most iconic landscapes.
